Two of the Tum Tum Horizons Leadership Team had the opportunity to attend a wonderful gathering of other Horizons community's in Chewelah on Thursday, May 21st with Harry Boyte. Harry is the Co-directory for Democracy and Citizenship at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota. He has been asked by the NW Area Foundation to document the Horizons program throught the Foundation's 7 state region.
Harry asked each of us to talk about why we were involved in Horizons and to share our unique experience in how it has either affected us personally or as a community.
Some of the comments made:
  • It has empowered our community to make change from within
  • We have networked people with ideas together with those who can make it happen
  • We have learned how to integrate newcomers into our community
  • "Reducing poverty by reducing barriers"
  • Creating hope for our community
  • Connecting the past and the future
  • Gives our youth an opportunity to make their own mark on our community
